If The Internet went Quiet

Social media's primary motivation is recognition. We're searching for understanding in the form of a larger network, because what's the point in churning out updates daily if not to attract and captivate an audience, huh? Sharing our work and thoughts, connecting with people, opening up our metaphorical internet doors into our homes..these are valid reasons to check twitter. But more often, we share to share. Liking becomes less about what we like and more about the cultural recognition it gives us. Meaning is often based on cultural context, so it becomes difficult to play the game of what would our ancestors have done. Yet, what would they've seen in social media, in the internet in general? The age that we live in allows for greater communication than ever before. We're able to affect change, to widen our reach, and in powerful ways, influence our cities and the world. Networking makes connection comfortable and easy. Yet, in constantly connecting, we're losing our ability to communicate without the web to clamor behind us.

The function of social media gives us a way to say, "look what I'm doing," regardless of whether we're doing it or not. My friend and I were laughing about instagrams..from location scouting, prop styling, editing, etc. I'm not saying that these are bad things, just that our realities are skewed. It's not just about sharing our breakfast anymore..now our breakfast has to be beautiful. Which is fine. Art becoming greater in the scheme of our daily lives isn't something I oppose, but why do we do it? Is this all one huge game of follow the leader? I don't have answers, just questions. What would it look like to go off social media? What would it look like to communicate solely via letters? What's the function of blogs these days? Do we need this network? What's the point of it all? It fascinates me in a sobering way that we even have to ask ourselves these questions.

Society has evolved to a point where the thought of not having an online presence and not sharing our work puts us in league with the dinosaurs. I understand the appeal, perhaps too well. But it saddens me because I've been plugged into this changing, growing, controlling network. I wake up to the phone, check twitter. I take photo. I can talk to people without talking to them. Everything is an instagram opportunity. I should tweet that and this.

Do you know what's sad? I've lost the ability to sit in silence. It's difficult for me to be still. I'm rediscovering how to read without interruption. I'm trying to simplify my thinking into one line, not many different avenues all begging for my attention at once. I removed notifications from my phone awhile ago, but I sit and suddenly I'm checking my phone simply to check it. Is it that I, or we, don't remember how to even exist without constantly reviewing the never-ending stream of forever updating information? As I write this, I have about 10 tabs open.

We're spending more time cultivating our online personas than our character and personality in real life. Years ago, this wasn't a part of my normal routine. Take 2004. Instagram was nonexistent and iPhones were a thing of the future. Facebook had come out only recently and blogging was starting to gain traction. Smart phones existed, but compared to our phones today, we'd have called them illiterate. Yes, we had the internet, the next thing was coming, but everything was relatively quiet. I romanticize the past, but there's a marked difference in how we operate as a people with the increase of technology and the ease of networking. Please don't think I'm proclaiming a cry of abandonment of social media. I've said before, I enjoy instagram. But I don't want to mindlessly ingest and consume without question. What does the role of social media play in our lives and how will it continue to evolve as we as a people and society grow and change?

The thought of Google Glass terrifies me, and the promise of always being connected sounds like a nightmare. Contrary to the trends of 2014, I feel most fulfilled when I'm less connected. The more I am in the "real" world, the more inspired, well-rounded, and content I am. The less connected I am on social media, the more connected I am in real life. I think it's dangerous when we enter into social networking as a natural occurrence of daily life, and don't recognize the difference between what's shared and what exists. The argument could be made that social media is part of ordinary routines, but that's the gist of this post. We're at a place when sharing is synonymous with existing, and to go without sharing is a kiss of death, or really a refusal to cry.

What would happen if the internet went quiet and we all just lived our lives? This is something I wonder about when my phone and laptop are gone.

Absent in our Presence

I have no sense of direction. I'm really poor in geography. I'm consistently 100% wrong when it comes to navigating, I could make a tourist lost. If you ask me where north is, I’ll probably point south. And if we're supposed to turn left, I’ll convince you to turn right. Show me a paper map or teach me how to use compass, my brain wouldn't seem to grasp it.

But I want to learn and I'm actually grateful for my cell phone because I can always find directions as there's a Map apps. Technology can be a beautiful thing, anyway. We have endless amounts of information at our fingertips. We can ask questions and get answers. Sometimes I think Google is the 8th wonder of the world. We don't have to miss someone as badly because we can watch them document their lives through pictures and videos. And we can inform ourselves on current events and world news.

And I also believe that technology can get in our way. With all of the information at our fingertips, how much are we reading? What are we learning? Are we trying to take it all in? We have less time reading real books, you see. I always ask myself how much time I've spent informing myself about what's going on in the world versus refreshing my social media sites. And lately when I see my cell phone, I see distraction.

As much as technology adds to our lives, it also takes some away. Like when you're in a room full of  friends and the only people you are talking to are the ones that are not there. Or when you're at a live concert but only view it through the screen of your camera. You're absent in your presence. Technology can get in the way when you spend the whole night documenting what you're doing, instead of actually doing it. When you spend more time letting the world know who you're with rather than just simply being with them. And cell phones can get in the way when you're driving on the road and decide to check that text message. Refresh that news feed, take your eyes off the road, and risk your/other's life just to figure out what someone else is doing.

I plan to start a game that's about being present. It's about putting down your phone, spending time with the people you're with, ignoring that incessant pull to check social media and send out a million text messages, or just to touch random buttons on your phone, ignoring the need to let everyone know what you're doing, reducing your distractions, savoring every bite of your food, rather than seeing how many people 'liked' what you ate. And it's caring more about what you're doing rather than what your facebook friends are doing. The game's about being here in real life with the people you love. Let's play together.

It's time to put our cell phones down, turn them off. Sit and have conversations with friends without distraction. Spend time with your family and hear what they're actually saying. Go outside or stay inside and read a book. Read the newspaper or make some art. Learn a new hobby. I really wanna do things manually without using apps. It's time to start gathering up knowledge and be informed, rather than just opinionated. Stop letting all those little visual and audio notifications interrupt your day. Let's allow ourselves a moment to be where we are. I think we often get so busy trying to capture the moment that we forget to truly experience it.

Who's Dictating your Life?

We can't jump off bridges anymore because our smart phones will get ruined. We can’t take skinny dips in the ocean, because there's no service on the beach and adventures aren't real unless they're on Instagram. Technology has doomed the spontaneity of adventure and we're helping destroy it every time we Google, check-in, and hashtag.

I hope you are all understanding yet skeptical of that. There's both good and bad that comes of social media, but you must decide what extent of sharing feels right for you and what brings you true happiness. I must confess that I hope your phone doesn't dictate your life. I hope that when you're out exploring and when you're out with friends, it stays in your pocket. Just remember that the best moments can't be captured by a status update, and that no one knowing about your most amazing experiences doesn't invalidate such moments. I'm actually writing this just to remind myself. Have a good life. :)

Sweet Evil in the Cup

From the alarm clock to a traffic jam on your way to work or you-know-where, there are many pretty morbid experiences in the morning. Embodying these morning moods, here's an idea for you to literally throw in some skulls into your morning coffee. Yep, you can make that coffee 100% sinister by adding these amazing skull and cross bones sugar cubes to your cup. These skulls are created by the brilliantly creative mind and fingers of designer Snow Violent.

Can you imagine looking down into your coffee and having the skull staring back at you? You watch as the bones float and bob in your cup slowly dissolving in the murky darkness of your cup. Now that's the way to start the day. Lol. But make sure your guests know your sense of humor before you sweeten their coffee with these. :p

I am Iron Man

I'm not a lifetime comic book fan. Thanks to Ifo for introducing me to Marvel superheroes, and now I'm an avid fan of them. Iron Man 3 is such a great film. This isn't Shakespearean Thor, or honourable Captain America. But they're all hot! This is wise-cracking Iron Man, with his unpredictability being his greatest weapon.

The story line this time shows Tony Stark’s world being torn apart by the Mandarin and after a near death experience he starts an odyssey of rebuilding and retribution. By now I think it’s undeniable that no one could play the role of Tony Stark quite like Robert Downey Jr. does as once again he delivers an exquisite performance which is funny, smart and quite spectacular and hot. And the additions of both Ben Kingsley and Guy Pearce leave the biggest mark which makes the movie even more awesome.

So do I need to review more about Iron Man 3? I'm sure you already know how epic this movie is. It's not that I'm lazy to write but it isn't so easy to exaggerate things..you know, it's like you were experiencing the greatest moment ever and there are no words can describe to people how great it was. So I'm just gonna tell you my favorite jaw-dropping, awesome scenes from Iron Man 3.

The moment when......

....Tony said, "I have to protect the one thing that I can't live without. That's you," to Pepper. Oh, that moment! Okay, this doesn't count.

....Tony called his suit to rescued Pepper when their house got bombed. I'm more worried about the house and the expensive cars.

....Tony's teaming up with a cute, precocious boy named Harley, which gives Tony his Dora the Explorer watch.

....the Mandarin's caught red-handed and he turns out to be a fake villain, he's just a drunk British old man names Trevor. I love the twist there. Ifo told me that according to comic, the Mandarin has some magics as his power, but now it's twisted and I love it.

....Iron Man saves 13 people who fall out of the plane, without Tony being in the suit!

....Killian draws out fire from his mouth like a dragon. He's an excellent villain.

....all Tony's armors come in action all at once. They're all awesome! Even cooler than Transformers.

....the infuriated Pepper gets up from fire and kicks ass!

Sorry for the spoilers. :p

Because Facebook is not Life

Hey loves! Oh such a lazy Saturday. It heavily rains outside and I have to admit, I'm an utterly lazy person when it's raining like today. It's something about the dreary weather that makes me want to cuddle up with hot tea and do absolutely nothing. Also, my mind seems to wander more....to unproductive, irrelevant places..and once again contributing to my theory: rainy day makes me a lazy lady

So I'm just listening to some oldies, scrolling through tumblr, vibering with Ifo, reading friends' blogs, hearting pictures on weheartit...wandering aimlessly just like my mind . I should have a new name; Wanderer would be nice..like Wanda in The Host. Okay scratch that.

I'd just love to share something I found in Thought Catalog. It's the 16 reasons you should spend less time in facebook. Did somebody just say "ouch"? I know this is an old cliche, but I think this is important for everyone and no offense, people nowadays have unconsciously spent a big chunk of their lives on facebook. Let's check out why you should limit your facebooking time:

Because you’re procrastinating doing work that's relevant to your life.

Because you don’t actually care about 75% of the people on your facebook.

Because rants are annoying and a day can’t go past without someone ranting on there.

Because you don’t need to know what's going on in that many people’s lives.

Because you don’t need that many people knowing what's going on in your life.

Because a lot of people are faking it.

Because 85% of it is useless information that you'll soon forget.

Because you’re comparing your life to what your friends depict their life as.

Because photos of sonograms and daily baby bumps do not enrich your life in anyway.

Because relationship statuses or a lack thereof don't tell you anything about the relationship status.

Because your ego is way too tied to your facebook interactions.

Because you’ll give less of a shit what people think and there is a lot of freedom in that.

Because you’ll spend more time and effort cultivating and maintaining real relationships.

Because you want to like people and have faith in humanity.

Because wouldn't you rather be living your life than posting about it?

Because Facebook is not real life.

I'll See You in Another Life

Vanilla Sky was released 12 years ago and I watched it today for the 1st time. How lame is that? I mean, how could I missed watching a brilliant film that starred by Tom Cruise? Never mind, I've watched it anyway. Most reviewers said that Vanilla Sky was the most baffling and confusing movie ever. Poor them. Lol.

The story's about David (Tom), who has just about everything including a publishing empire and a sex partner named Julie (Cameron Diaz). At one party, David met Sofia (Penelope Cruz) and they spend the night together. When Julie finds out, she offers David a lift and drives off a bridge to kill themselves. However, Julie's the only one who dies while David survives..with a horribly disfigured face. And that's when the strange things started.

I still love him even with this face.

For a man that traffics on his looks, damaged face is the end of the world. David seeks every avenue of plastic surgery and facial reconstruction he can find, and while doing so, he starts to lose his grip on sanity.

He sees Julie everywhere, he has a great time with Sofia but suddenly she turns into Julie, he imagines the BOD's scheming to kick him out of the company, and he finds himself charged with a murder - but none of those things are real. He's been living in his own lucid dream right after Sofia left him on his drunken night. He killed himself with overdosed drug, but he's not really dead. Truth is, he signed a contract with Life Extension before, a place where people are frozen until a cure for their illness is available. So David's suspended, preserved and placed in a lucid dream state for 150 years. When he realize that it's all a dream, he says goodbye to Sofia and decides to come back into reality by leaping off a building. The end. It's sad because in real life, Sofia doesn't exist anymore.

"..I'll see you in another life.." ~ I tear up at this..

Yes, it's confusing but I'm amazed and totally drawn into it. While it looks like there's a lot of options - David is either crazy, dreaming, dead, or the victim of conspiracy - this film really makes you believe them all simultaneously. And I love it, I love this kind of film, how it challenges my mind and at the same time gives me new perspective on something, such as life. I really love Vanilla Sky as much as I love Inception.

And by the way, these are the beautiful quotes I caught from Vanilla Sky:

Every passing minute is another chance to turn it all around.
You can do whatever you want with your life, but one day you’ll know what love truly is. It’s the sour and the sweet. And I know sour, which allows me to appreciate the sweet.
Most of us live our whole lives without any real adventure to call our own. What is any life without the pursuit of a dream?

How Many Times has the World Ended?

The 7th semester of my degree has ended yesterday. Here comes the holidayyyy! Heeee...
Today was great, I was hanging out with Ifo and our dear friend Lan at his shop in Sulaman Central. Actually we're doing this public interview about 3 celebrations in our country: Xmas, CNY and Diwali (it was for somebody's assignment). We're supposed to ask random people in public, but we were just too lazy to do so. :p Guess how we did? I was interviewer while 2 of them became the interviewees by impersonating 9 people with different races, slangs and ages. It's hilarious when we listened back to the recording. They reminded me of Jozan. Lol.

By the way, I have something interesting to share with you. I'm not sure if you find it interesting too, I got this from an email, and I need your opinions about it. Here we go:

So, what say you?

When Hard Work is a Joy

Food Product Development (FPD) is one of the subjects that I take for this semester. As a part of assessments, we're divided into teams to establish companies and develop new innovative food products. My team, Yummy Kids World Sdn Bhd have developed soy pancakes, namely Yummy Tummy Pancake, and yes, we're targeting on children since we fell under category of food for 5 to 6 year-old kids. This is the reason I spent most times in labs and to be frank, it's the most challenging subject so far. All of us have worked so hard until the day of FPD Exhibition and Competition 2012, which was yesterday at our faculty (School of Food Science and Nutrition).

The event was a collaboration between faculty and Adabi Consumer Industries Sdn Bhd. So the judges of competition consisted of our lecturers and Adabi team including the president of Adabi, Mr Abdul Hady. The products include soy pancakes (ours), instant cereal drink, sweet potato brown rice crackers (best booth), spinach biscuits, breakfast cereals, energy bars (2nd place), mix chicken cake (3rd place), chicken-filled croquette (best product - 1st place), ravioli with dhal paste, chicken balls, seaweed and hinava flavored pizza, and fish patties. I loved them all.

The judges went from booth to booth for product testing and judging, which was both nerve-wrecking and exciting. They gave us constructive feedback including comments and suggestions, and we're delighted when one of lecturers praised us saying "I've never tasted such a delicious pancake before. Your pancake is even better than the ones that are served in hotels. I love it and if I were you, I'll take the challenge to sell this product in future." Touché! ^^

Even though we only won the consolation prize, it's still a joyful day. Besides, we didn't expect to win at all because the bottom line is that we wanted to learn and have more experiences for future's sake. And yes, I've learned so many things and had fun in so many ways. I enjoyed working with my team and together we've made unforgettable memories. We've also had so much fun with other teams and been very supportive all this time. Congrats to my friends who won and I'm wishing the best for all of us in next chapters.

our developed food products.

my team: Yummy Kids World Sdn Bhd
we made it!

they won The Best Booth.

me and Umi, my best friend and one of the team members that won The Best Product .

with my Chinese friends.

It's fun to be a food technologist. ^^
